At Queen Creek Veterinary Clinic, we’ve been a proud part of this community since 1997. We’ve seen our town grow, but one thing remains the same: the devastating impact of Canine Parvovirus (Parvo) on local families.
Parvo is an aggressive, highly contagious virus that thrives in our environment. However, it is also highly preventable. As your neighborhood vet, we want to ensure you have the tools to spot it early and the plan to prevent it entirely.
The Reality of Parvo in Queen Creek
Parvo is a strong virus. It doesn’t just disappear; it can live in the Arizona soil, on our sidewalks, and in our parks for a year or more. It is primarily spread through contact with infected feces, which means your dog can pick it up simply by sniffing the wrong spot on a walk.
Why it’s a medical emergency:
- Intestinal Damage: It attacks the lining of the GI tract, preventing any absorption of nutrients or water.
- Immune Suppression: It targets bone marrow, leaving puppies with no way to fight off secondary infections.
- Rapid Decline: Without professional help, Parvo can be fatal in as little as 48 to 72 hours.

Red Alerts: Symptoms You Can’t Ignore
Early detection is the difference between a long hospital stay and a quick recovery. If your dog, especially a puppy, shows these signs, call us at (480) 987-8000 immediately:
- The “Quiet” Puppy: Sudden, extreme lethargy or a lack of interest in play.
- Loss of Appetite: Refusing a meal is often the very first sign.
- Vomiting and Diarrhea: Often severe, watery, and may contain blood or have a distinct, foul odor.
- Painful Belly: They may hunch over or cry out when their abdomen is touched.
Important: If you suspect Parvo, please call us before you arrive. We have a dedicated isolation ward with a separate entrance to keep our other patients safe while giving your pet the immediate care they need.
How We Fight Back: Supportive Care
Because Parvo is a virus, there is no “instant cure.” Instead, we provide aggressive supportive care to keep your dog’s body strong while they fight the infection. Our protocol includes:
- Hospitalization: In our specialized isolation unit.
- IV Fluid Therapy: The most critical step to prevent dehydration.
- Targeted Medications: To stop vomiting, manage pain, and prevent sepsis.
- Nutritional Support: Feeding the gut as soon as they can tolerate it to speed up healing.
The Best Defense: Prevention & Vaccination
We believe in “prevention first.” You can protect your pet for less than $1 a day through our Puppy and Dog Wellness Plans.
- Finish the Series: Puppies need a full series of DAPV (Distemper/Parvo) shots every 3–4 weeks until they are at least 16 weeks old.
- The “Feet Off the Ground” Rule: Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, do not let them walk in public spaces. Carry them from the car to our exam room to avoid contact with the ground.
- Regular Boosters: Adult dogs need annual or tri-annual boosters to stay protected for life.
